CMEG's Purpose

Networking at a meetingThe Chicago Museum Exhibitors Group (CMEG) promotes the free exchange of information and ideas among people in the Chicago area involved in the development, design, and production of museum exhibits through discussion of exhibit related issues and personal interactions. CMEG members work with a strong mix of large and small, lakeshore and inland, mainstream and off-the-beaten path museums.

Membership is unceremonious. CMEG's roughly 500 members include people connected with an institution, independent professionals, students, and people who work in an exhibit related business. No dues are charged, nor are there formal requirements for joining CMEG.

Quarterly Meetings are the primary activity of CMEG. The meetings are informal and practical: topic discussions, exhibit viewings, demonstrations, professional workshops, dinner meetings, and/or social events. Meeting announcements are distributed through a membership email list.

Meeting at a fabricatorCMEG is not open to commercial activity, but encourages professional communications and sharing of resources, including the Links and Resources available on this website. A limited number of job and professional announcements may be emailed to members.

CMEG is guided by a Steering Committee (listed on the Contact page) that plans meetings, maintains the email list, sends out meeting and other announcements, and maintains the continuity and purpose of CMEG.

History

CMEG held its first official meeting on October 3, 1991 at the John G. Shedd Aquarium—to gather interested parties and discuss what the group might accomplish. Early organizers drew on the experience of the Museum Communicators Group, a precursor to CMEG, which met in Chicago from 1981 to 1985.

The original plan to have monthly meetings was carried out (with the occasional month off) until 1997, when the switch was made to having quarterly meetings, to allow enough planning time for more substantial topics to be covered. Over the years, CMEG has also held workshops and a discussion forum, distributed job postings, hosted an AAM Mentoring Roundtable, created a Chicago museum history brochure and a document about forming CMEG-like groups, organized road trips (House on the Rock, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Graceland), joined Facebook, and has held meetings at over 60 different Chicago-area museums and institutions, as well as at a variety of other venues.

Check out the CMEG Archive for a list of meetings and milestones.
